What is the Holy Spirit? Jehovah’s Witnesses are taught the Holy Spirit is an impersonal force, and their teachings compare the Holy Spirit to electricity. Is this accurate? Is this what the Bible says?

1) In Acts chapter 5 we read about a man named Ananias and Sapphira and here we learn something important about the Holy Spirit.

But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2 and kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, BUT UNTO GOD. Acts 5:1-4 KJV

2) Here, when the people rebelled against the Holy Spirit, they became enemies of God.

But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit:
therefore he was turned to be their enemy,
and he fought against them.
Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying,
Where is he that brought them up out of the sea
with the shepherd of his flock?
where is he that put his holy Spirit within him? Isa. 63:10,11

4) Here it is an unforgivable sin to speak against the Holy Spirit. Notice this is not so regarding the Son of Man.

Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. Matt 12:32

And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. Luke 12

5) IF the Holy Spirit is only an impersonal force, like electricity, than how can the Holy Spirit be grieved?

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Eph. 4:30 KJV

6) IF the Holy Spirit, is just an unseen, impersonal force, how can the Holy Spirit, guide us, lead us, teach us and comfort us. Can an impersonal force comfort?

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; John 14:16 KJV

7) Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Helper. Doesn’t sound like electricity to me. And Jesus said HE would send forth the Holy Spirit.

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, *I* will send him to you. John 16:7 ESV

That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” John 16:15 NIV

8) The Scriptures also tell us that the Holy Spirit speaks, can an impersonal, electrical charge speak?

Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.'” Acts 21:11 NIV

I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. Acts 20:23 NIV

9) The Holy Spirit teaches us. Can an impersonal force, like electricity teach?

As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him.
1 John 2:27 NIV

I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.  He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
John 16:12-15 NIV

10) The Holy Spirit helps us, intercedes for us, when we pray. How can an impersonal electrical charge intervene on our behalf?

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will” (Romans 8:26¬–27).

11) Scriptures also say the Holy Spirit raised up Jesus.

Romans 8:11 – But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
1 Peter 3:18 – For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.

12) The Holy Spirit was involved in the creation process:
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Gen. 1:1,2 KJV

The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. Job 33:4 KJV

Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth. Ps. 104:30 KJV

13) The Holy Spirit dwells within us.

John 14: 16-18 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

I hope these scriptures help you on your discovery of what exactly is the Holy Spirit.

When we study God’s word, without the Holy Spirit, (if we have not yet received it for example) it can just be a dull reading of words that perhaps we have read before. But upon receiving the Holy Spirit, God’s word, in His letter to us, becomes alive, it pierces our hearts, previously unknown to us, it can make us leap for joy, burst into tears of joy, or grieve us deeply (if we’ve done something displeasing for example). God’s words come to life, as though written to us personally, as though a letter from a physical parent to his physical child would have infinitely more meaning to his child for example, than for a stranger who might happen to read these same words. This is one way the Holy Spirit bears witness to our spirit. How can this be said to be an impersonal force, like electricity? Makes no sense does it?

Another example, if you were to call someone on the telephone, you would not say, I and the telephone called you! No, you would give no credit to the device you used. Why then is all this credit given, if the Holy Spirit is merely like electricity? That would be like Jesus saying, I will send electricity and it will comfort you. Again, makes no sense does it?

This is an example of how the Watchtower often totally ignores whatever Scriptures don’t agree with their own teachings. It would not be surprising if these were also removed or misworded in a yet newer revision of their translation, as they have done with almost all of the Scriptures that deal with the Deity of Jesus for example.
This is why using an alternate translation and comparing is so vital, when trying to discover what the truth of the Scriptures Really say, while still one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, for the organization *has changed* the verses which do not agree with their teachings. This becomes readily apparent when checking other Translations, therefore I encourage you to do so.

This is just one part, of examining what the scriptures say about Jesus. There are So many things that need to be examined, Is Jesus God? Is it proper to pray to Jesus? If Jesus is God why did He pray to God? Why did He always give all glory and honor to the Father, if He is God?

Is Jesus the Alpha and Omega? Is it proper to worship Jesus? Jesus worshiped the Father so why would Christians worship the Son?
In this, part 1, we will examine what the Scriptures say about the Deity of Jesus.
(since Jehovah’s Witnesses used the King James Translation prior to the New World Translation, there should be no objection to this translation. Unless otherwise noted, King James is used throughout)

Let us examine the scriptures to see what it says.

1) In this first scripture we see Jesus is identified as mighty God, and everlasting Father.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,
The Prince of Peace. Isa. 9:6

2) In this second scripture, Jesus is identified as God.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word WAS GOD. John 1:1
(*Using Bible Hub online, one can see 20 different translations render it this same way or very similarly, this is true of all scriptures quoted)
3) In this third scripture, the Father calls the Son,,,,God.

But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O GOD, is for ever and ever
Heb. 1:8

Which is quoted from Psalm 45:6 Thy Throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of his kingdom.

4) Notice here that it says that God purchased the church WITH THIS BLOOD. Who died for us? It was not Jehovah was it? No, it was Jesus, yet here He is called God.

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of GOD, WHICH HE HATH PURCHASED WITH HIS OWN BLOOD.
Acts 20:28

5) Here it says plainly that Jesus Christ is the true GOD.

And we know that the SON OF GOD is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son JESUS CHRIST. THIS IS THE TRUE GOD, AND ETERNAL LIFE. 1 John 5:20

6) Here Jesus is identified as the great God and Savior.

looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of THE GREAT GOD AND OUR SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, Titus 2:13

7) In this scripture Jesus is said to be deity.

“For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.” Col. 2:9

8) I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. John 8:24
*note* in the Greek (he) is not there, notice this verse therefore in the following translations:

That is why I told you that you will die in your sins, for unless you believe that I AM, you’ll die in your sins.” International Standard

“I said to you that you shall die in your sins, for unless you shall believe that I AM THE LIVING GOD, you shall die in your sins.”
Aramaic Bible in Plain English

Therefore I said unto you that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye do not believe that I AM, ye shall die in your sins. Jubilee Bible 2000

I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins. Darby Bible Translation

*Interesting to note as well, that in the Kingdom Interlinear Translation in the 1969 Purple edition, on the Greek side, renders it as follows-

KIT John 8:24 Therefore I said to you, you will die in the sins of you if ever for not you should believe that I am,
(on the English side the word he is added)
9) Again Jesus refers to Himself as the I AM.

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. King James Bible John 8:58

10) Doubting Thomas knew exactly who Jesus was, and when he referred to Jesus as God, was not corrected.

John 20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

11) In Rev. Jesus is identified as the Alpha and Omega and also as the Almighty.

Rev. 1:7,8 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Ask yourself who is coming with clouds? Who was pierced? Yes it was Jesus, notice in the following verse how Jesus identifies himself.

11) The Jews knew exactly who Jesus was claiming to be, which is why they wanted to kill him.
Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. John 5:18

Why did the Jews think that claiming to be the Son of God was claiming to be God?

A human father has a human son. In the bible for example, Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brothers; Matt 1:2

If human fathers beget human sons, what does God beget?

Is Jesus Michael?

Does your religion teach that Jesus is Michael the Archangel? Is this correct? What does the bible say?

Hebrews 1:4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

Right away we notice Jesus is superior to the angels.

” For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
today I have become your Father Heb. 1:5

Again a comparison is made between Jesus and the angels, asking to which one of the angels did God ever say? Yet God did say this to His Only Begotten Son.

Now in verse 6 it says:  “LET ALL GOD’S ANGELS WORSHIP HIM.

Now ask yourselves, aren’t the angels higher than we are? If angels are commanded to worship Jesus, shouldn’t we worship Him too?

In reading Hebrews chapter 1, the superiority of Jesus over the angels is presented, this alone should make this clear and understood.

Philippians 2:8-11 gives us further insight. Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Again, the superiority of Jesus is brought to our attention, it says that at his name every knee should bow!

Is there any way to argue about the command God gave to the angels? Should we do any less?

Now ask yourselves, aren’t the angels higher than we are? If angels are commanded to worship Jesus, shouldn’t we worship Him too?

So then if we refuse to honor, and worship Jesus, then we are DISOBEYING AND DISHONORING THE FATHER.

In the book of Revelation, the Apostle John, fell at the feet of the angel, to worship him, but read what happens next.

At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.” Rev. 19:10

Angels, or any other created thing, cannot be worshiped, according to the Scriptures, and the command given in Exodus.

Right away, in the Ten Commandments, does God make this clear.

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

3 “You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:2,3

God says in Exodus 34:14: “for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.’

“Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’“ Matt. 4:10

Nowhere, in all of the Holy Scriptures does it say that Jesus is Michael.

But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you! Jude 1:9

Here the archangel Michael did not dare condemn Satan.

Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Matt. 4:10

Here we see that Jesus did rebuke Satan.

And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?” Zech. 3:2

Again we see Jesus rebukes Satan. But remember the angel did not dare to do this? (Jude 1:9)

An archangel, is a higher order of angel.  Hebrews 1 shows the superiority of Jesus over the angels, even an archangel is an angel, just a higher order of angel. The definition of an archangel is an angel of the highest rank, Michael and Gabriel are generally recognized as archangels by most Christians.

The scripture that is used to ‘prove’ Jesus is merely an archangel is 1 Thess. 4:16

For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

“With the voice of an archangel” is not the same as being an archangel, if it was, then Jesus would also be a trumpet.

Let us see what the Bible says Jesus actually is.

John 1:1 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

John 5:18 – “For this cause therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

How does a son make himself equal to his father? They are both of the same kind, the Son being fully divine, deity, just as the Father is. A human father, begets a son, who is also human, they are “of the same kind”. A human begets a human, what does God beget? The Jews knew exactly what Jesus was claiming, which is why they sought to kill Him, saying it was blasphemy!

John 8:24 – “I said therefore to you, that you shall die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you shall die in your sins.” (Note: In the Greek, “He” is not there.)

John 8:58 -“Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.‘”

Exodus 3:14 -“And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’; and He said, Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

John 20:28 -“Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

John 20:29 – Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

*Notice* That Thomas was not rebuked for saying this, but commended!

Col. 2:9 -“For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.”

Heb. 1:8 – “But of the Son He says, “Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom.”

Quoted from Psalm 45:6 –  “Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Thy kingdom.”

Acts 20:28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, WHICH HE BOUGHT WITH HIS OWN BLOOD.

When did Jehovah buy the church with His own blood? No, that’s right He did’t! Who only redeemed us and bought us with His blood? That’s right, Jesus!

1 John 5:20 We know also that  Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his SON JESUS CHRIST. HE IS THE TRUE GOD AND ETERNAL LIFE.

For your Maker is your husband,The Lord of hosts is His name;

And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;

He is called the God of the whole earth. Isa. 54

He is the “everlasting Father” and “The mighty God” of Isaiah 9:6.

Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the MESSIAH, WHO IS GOD OVER ALL, forever praised! Amen. Ro. 9:5

When Jesus was on the earth, after the resurrection, His apostles repeatedly fell at His feet and worshiped Him, and He ACCEPTED THEIR WORSHIP! Surely if this was wrong, Jesus would have corrected them, as the angel did with John, but He didn’t. The following are just some of the many examples given in the Bible of those who worshiped Him.

“Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to WORSHIP HIM.” Matt. 2:2

On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and THEY BOWED DOWN AND WORSHIPED HIM. Matt. 2:11

Then those who were in the boat WORSHIPED HIM SAYING, “Truly you are the SON OF GOD.” Matt. 14:33

Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, CLASPED HIS FEET AND WORSHIPED HIM. John 28:9

So we see clearly Jesus is called our Lord, He is also called God in Hebrews and 1 John, and Isaiah, among others. It is clear, Jesus is Deity, He is our Lord, we are commanded to worship Him. (NOT saying He is the Father, for scripture makes it clear He is the Son, but fully Deity, yes that’s right, God the Son!).
